Why the Something School is important.
Generation Z have grown up in a world different to any other generation that has come before them. Born into a world of touch screen devices and WIFI connectivity, they do not know a world without tech, earning them the title of 'Digital Natives'.

Previous generations have spent their lives pushing the boundaries of digital, developing 3D printed organs, lab grown meats and virtual assistants to automate our lives.

This generation however - the generation in school today - are going to be facing a unique challenge of their own, looking at how can we ensure that our digital lives are safe, secure, ethical and are still innately human.

The 'Something School' aims to look at exactly this and more as part of Something Digital - Brisbane's Digital Festival.
How the day will run.
The Something School will be facilitated by the teams from Something Digital and BOP Industries. The day will feature talks from an international keynote and industry leaders combined with a range of immersive exercises.

This full day event will be held at The Capital, Brisbane's innovation precinct in Queen Street Mall. The program of the day will be broken into 3 key sections:

Digital Communities

  • What exactly is digital (and what is it not)?
  • How does digital impact our communities and ecosystems?
  • How is digital making our lives easier and more efficient and more enjoyable?

Digital Opportunities

  • How is digital impacting our jobs and our lives?
  • Where are the opportunities and where are the gaps in digital?
  • How is digital levelling the playing field in different industries around the world?

Digital Futures

  • The future is already here … but what does the decade ahead actually hold?
  • How do we learn from the past to create the future we want?
  • How does digital help us cope in a rapidly changing world?
The team running the show.

Who is the Something School for?
The Something School is designed for students from Grade 7-11 from schools across Brisbane. We recommend this program for students that have interests in business, technology, leadership and innovation.
When is the Something School running?
The Something School will take place on the 23rd of October with the program running from 9am - 3:30pm.

We ask that students arrive from 8:30am ready for the 9am kick off.
What do students need to bring?
All we ask is that you bring yourselves and some morning tea and lunch.

We’ll be providing everything you’ll need for the challenges as well as some awesome mentors, speakers and of course some snacks and lollies!

If possible (but not compulsory), we also ask that students bring a device (i.e. a laptop, tablet or mobile phone) as this may be handy for some of the research tasks.
What should we expect from the day?
The Something School is going to be one big day of ideation, creation and innovation! We’re going to have 60-80 high school students coming from across Brisbane to work on big challenges with some amazing mentors from around the world.

This day has been designed to help bring the student’s learning into the real world, whilst also opening their minds to a different way of thinking about a wide array of problems.
Can teachers come?
Of course! Each school can bring one teacher to accompany their students. For teaches we will make sure you have lots of ideas you can take back to the classroom. It’s a pretty fun day of PD!
